Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS) meeting with American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO)
A meeting was held between Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology on 6th Feb 2026 during the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO 2026) in Hong Kong.
Highlights of meeting.
- The American Academy of Ophthalmology has revised its membership dues for practicing ophthalmologists outside of the U.S. The Academy’s new membership dues structure takes into account each country’s economic circumstances and is intended to make it more affordable for practicing ophthalmologists in Nepal. The membership fee now for practicing ophthalmologists in Nepal is $200 USD. (This is reduced from $595 and, for reference, U.S. practicing ophthalmologists pay $1,050 for Academy membership).
- The Academy has a new International Fellow membership category. This new membership category serves to recognize a commitment to life-long learning. Those who meet the requirements for International Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists will have their name posted on the Academy’s website. You can learn more about the requirements at aao.org/intfellow.
- Residents doctors are able to take the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) International exam.
- Invitation to the Academy to participate in upcoming 28th NoScon by developing an AAO clinical session.
- Review the information AAO has the training programs in Nepal, so that AAO can update BCSC mailing list.
- Academy Express: Submit items for the regional Academy Express by using the guidelines at aao.box.com/s/b8b4ozeuqdnvy0f0u01mx8t1e4ejm1un. This is a great opportunity to share and highlight journal studies from NOS members, promote NOS meetings or news, highlight award winners, leadership appointments, or other recognition opportunities, etc. with a broader audience.
- Share updated member list with email addresses to ensure everyone receives the regional version of Academy Express, which is currently distributed to ophthalmologists in the Asia Pacific region.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS) & Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan (OST) during APAO 2026 Congress, Hong Kong
- The MOU was signed by: Prof. I-Jong Wang, President, The Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan (TOS) and Dr. Purushottam Joshi, President, Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS)
- The signing ceremony was witnessed by: Dr. Chin Ho Hou, General Secretary, TOS and Dr. Tejsu Singh Malla, General Secretary, NOS
- The MOU establishes a framework for scientific cooperation and collaboration in areas of mutual interest in the field of Ophthalmology.

- Professional development initiatives
- The agreement will remain in effect for five (5) years, with the possibility of extension upon written consent of both parties.
- Either party may terminate the MOU at any time with prior written notice to the other party.
Nepal Ophthalmic Society calls for prevention of SHAPU eye disease
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Ophthalmic Society has urged the Ministry of Health and Population to take immediate action to prevent SHAPU, an eye disease that has been affecting various regions of Nepal for decades.
During a meeting with Health Secretary Dr. Roshan Pokhrel, society officials, including President Assoc. Prof Dr. Purushottam Joshi , General Secretary Dr. Tejsu Singh Malla and Uveitis specialist Prof Dr. Ranju Sitaula submitted a memorandum requesting the government’s intervention. The society has also requested that Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU) be recognized as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) in Nepal.
This serious eye infection has been prevalent in Nepal for over five decades, primarily affecting marginalized and vulnerable communities.
According to the president Dr. Purushottam, Nepal Ophthalmic Society and other stakeholders along with The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division under the Ministry of Health has been raising awareness about SHAPU. Following an outbreak in 2023, the disease was incorporated into Nepal’s Early Warning and Response System (EWARS) and Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS).
He further stressed that research, prevention strategies, and treatment efforts must be prioritized along with the need for in-depth studies on the causes, transmission patterns, and preventive measures for SHAPU.
According to Dr. Sitaula, Seasonal hyperacute panuveitis is an aggressive eye disease believed to be caused by white moth. It usually begins with end of monsoon (August-September) and usually ending with peaking of winter in December-January. Redness is one eye with sudden decrease in vision are some of its symptom and if treatment is not received immediately, then permanent vision loss may occur.
According to Dr. Tejsu, General secretary, Nepal Ophthalmic Society founded in 1985 is the organization of Nepalese Ophthalmologist, and the society plays and important role in advocating eye disease and eye health policy . The society plans to organize a workshop in SHAPU in future.
नेपाल अफ्थाल्मिक सोसाइटीद्वारा नेतृत्व विकास तालिमको आयोजना
पोखरा- नेपाल अफ्थाल्मिक सोसाइटीले नेत्र चिकित्सकहरूका लागि पाेखरामा एक दिने नेतृत्व विकास तालिमको आयोजना गरेको छ । उक्त कार्यक्रम नेपाल मेडिकल एसोसिएसनका उपाध्यक्ष तथा गण्डकी प्रदेशका संयोजक डा राजन शर्माको विशेष आतिथ्यतामा सम्पन्न भएको हो ।
उक्त तालिममा राष्ट्रिय तथा अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय नेतृत्व विकास प्रशिक्षकका रूपमा परिचित उत्तम झा मुख्य प्रशिक्षक थिए । करिब ३० वर्षको अनुभव रहेका झाले पोखरास्थित विभिन्न आँखा अस्पतालका नेत्र चिकित्सक तथा आवासीय चिकित्सकहरूलाई नेतृत्व विकाससम्बन्धी प्रशिक्षण प्रदान गरेका थिए ।
नेपाल अफ्थाल्मिक सोसाइटीका अध्यक्ष एसोसिएट प्रोफेसर डा पुरुषोत्तम जोशीका अनुसार, सोसाइटीका सदस्यहरूको व्यक्तिगत तथा व्यवसायिक विकासका लागि यस्ता कार्यक्रम आवश्यक भएकाले यसको सुरुवात गरिएको हो । सोसाइटीका महासचिव डा तेजसु सिंह मल्लका अनुसार, आगामी दिनमा बाँकी रहेका ६ वटा प्रदेशमा पनि यस्ता कार्यक्रम सञ्चालन गर्ने योजना रहेको छ ।
महासचिव मल्लले नैत्रिक चिकित्सा क्षेत्रमा प्राविधिक सीप हस्तान्तरण वार्षिक सम्मेलनमार्फत भइरहे पनि गैरप्राविधिक सीप विकासमा कम ध्यान दिइएकाले नेतृत्व विकास तालिम आवश्यक भएको जानकारी दिए । हालै सम्पन्न वार्षिक सम्मेलनमा समेत नेपाल लिडरशिप डेभलपमेन्ट प्रोग्राम अन्तर्गत एक विशेष सत्र राखिएको बताइएको छ ।
नेपाल अफ्थाल्मिक सोसाइटीले भविष्यमा नेपाल नेतृत्व विकास कार्यक्रम स्थापनाका लागि योजना बनाइरहेको र यसमार्फत सहभागीहरुलाई अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय नेतृत्व विकास कार्यक्रममा समेत सहभागिता जनाउन मद्धत पुर्याउने छ । नेपाल अफ्थाल्मिक सोसाइटी आँखा विशेषज्ञहरुको छाता संगठन हो । ५ सयभन्दा धेरै आँखा चिकित्सकहरु सहभागी सोसाइटीले सन् १९८५ मा स्थापना भएयता आँखा विशेषज्ञहरुको पेशागत विकास, हकहितमा क्रियाशिल हुनुका साथै राज्यसमक्ष नीतिगत सुधारका विषयहरुमा पहल र पैरवी गर्दै आएको छ ।
